I've started to see little meaningful difference between a religious believer and a battered woman.
Both have given away their personal sovereignty and subjugated themselves, both believe they don't deserve a better treatment and that they are from their less than stands on its own may have placed or something to deserve the treatment have done.
Neither think they deserve better treatment and afraid to leave said relationship for both fear of eternal hell for the former is being stalked and murdered for the latter. Of course, with some religious sects is be hunted and killed or persecuted for leave, or being shunned by the community and is ejected by family and friends are not that different from the social attitudes towards women only a few decades ago separated.
The attitude that a woman with a man, so that a human being, regardless of how shared, is better than none at all-no different than the social attitude who believe in a god is superior to not believing in a.
The only substantive difference is that with the battered woman or really fair – let's battered man because sometimes the woman is the combination with mistreatment that batterer also occurs in gay and lesbian relationships – we are all human beings, not better or worse than each other – there is at least an actual person who is responsible for store and abuse of the battered person. Whereas for the believers, they need to do the beating on themselves and often the family, and that led to a lot of religious, psychological torture and kinkiness has, itself, unfortunately horrors visited on children, teenagers, vulnerable adults and non-believers. Often for non-family, this takes the form of intolerance and discrimination at best and at worst motivate religious violence.
The battered person can have some private consolation that perhaps the abuse is not really their fault, it is up to their abuser, but they are for a variety of reasons – social pressure, financial, for the children? without any thought to what they really said his children education – but perhaps the biggest reason that people remain in battering relationships is because as bad as it is, it can be even better than their previous experiences, there is some consolation in fame (as terrible as that was to write) and the fear that if their partners all abusers being fear that perhaps it is they who brings in the other person.
Now, there is something to be said about that last part – in many workshops that I've tuned about dealing with difficult relationships and workplace conflict management – the so-called golden rule of doing to others is something that falls far short of the mark, because there are people who are good with badly treated and then gives them permission for the treatment of others in the same way.
With believers they have not that private consolation from there maybe a kinder, gentler god there for them-people inferior to a deity by definition and design-human definition and design.
Although religion the opiate of the masses and the social mechanism is to prevent the poor from the rich to take their stuff slaughter-it seems that the more awareness we social on how to treat and interact with each other – as equal and equally deserves pity, treatment and equality – so too are beginning to re-believers think their relationship with god.
If the society says that anytime citizen gets to vote, and have the expectation of security of person, home, jobs, that discrimination is not acceptable, that hate crimes are not acceptable, that everyone is equal under the law and the law specifically for this all-inclusive-gay-marriage equality is the current legal basis in many secular countries which proclaim human rights but do not have the same rights equally to all citizens or would-be citizens extended? then believers who by their religion to be told that they are special and better than everyone else and that others don't deserve the same rights and legal protection – it must begin to seep into that there is something wrong with the religions and with god.
After all, you don't keep chasing after a person who makes big promises, and then never on your birthday calls and generally takes your worship and adoration for granted, actually, said the State demands worship or otherwise. A person who demands that you limit your family and friends on a narrow segment of society, which is better than the rest? When in fact and under the law, people are no better than any other. We are all areas of Nations in a global economy, and no country is self-sufficient.
The people in another country resources and services are no less worthy of livable wages, workplace safety, environmental protection and the dignity of their person. If we learn anything from Chernobyl, is that it doesn't matter where a disaster occurs, the wind and the water contaminates the backpack around the world for all to enjoy and get cancer from it.
As social attitudes change, changing our expectation of how we want to be treated and how we treat others. We don't have up with mistreatment – there are options, there are appeal of, there are equalizers. People in the Western secular democratic societies do not want to feel bad about themselves, would you not feel unworthy and miserable. What do we want? Happiness! When we want it? Right away!
So in non-fundamental circles, god revolves around a quasi Santa Claus and the apologists come and offer up the deathbed meshes, you don't have to be good or do good, you just have to accept the Savior, you could be bad, as long as you repent and are really sorry. They whitewash on the Bible texts, soften the edges and that old time religion is a kinder, gentler-not quite Mr. Rodgers because he accepted anyone exactly as they were and religions is ready to do that they still want their bigotries because it just won't not heaven if anyone could get.
Mega-churches are such as shopping malls with chapels, complete with coffee shops, book stores, ATMs, gym classes-a whole family close to home were religious gatherings seem incidental or value added part instead of the focal point.
Many religion who have been watching their Treasury and the numbers are dropping or embracing innovation: the big tent and polishing of the more shrill of the religious beliefs, soften the religion as a more inclusive and less damnation, less religious, really.
This will help to prop up the tents for a while, but in the end, people away, will migrate to return only on special days or perhaps nostalgia, because it's okay to feel good about yourself and your not religion have to do, when the purpose of religion, regardless of how softened, i.e. you not timesheet godje unworthy, which is why you should give the money, the meetings, worship and obey and do not make use of the free will that so many people talk about.
But you are, you get good enough on your own, good enough to be handled by anyone in your life, without exception.
